As the history of British colonialism recedes and a new phase of global integration intensifies, the critical tools of postcolonialism become less useful in reading South Asian diasporic fiction in Britain. A Passage to Globalism: Globalization, Identities, and South Asian Diasporic Fiction in Britain responds to the need for a critical framework that is able to address the relationships between identities and contemporary globality. It examines the politics of representation that are involved in positioning and categorizing South Asian diasporic fiction within such a world and asks questions of who and what are represented and how and to whom in selected works of South Asian diasporic fiction. A secondary aim of A Passage to Globalism addresses how South Asian diasporic fiction might extend and qualify theoretical explanations of globalization. This book asks what role does South Asian diasporic fiction play in constructing narratives of globalization? And how does literary analysis help us understand how «stories» of globalization are told? Testing and extending the utility of concepts from both Marxist and liberal explanations of globalization in this way, it argues for an integrated theoretical approach to a set of texts that operate at the complex intersection between Britain's colonial past and the complexity of contemporary globality as well as across local, national, and transnational literary contexts.

The book is a detailed introduction to Post-Blackness as a literary aesthetic, tracing its emergence to the philosophical movement that defined itself in the visual arts towards the end of the twentieth century. Aiming to redefine African American identity in a postethnic era, it highlights the gaps in the metanarrative of history through a reformulation of visual images in the memory as signifiers with their related associations to historical trauma. Stating that the reformulation of identity needs a decentering of race, the study follows Rita Dove as she traces the path to this reformulation in her volumes of poetry to initiate a Hegelian progression towards a post-racial freedom to expand contours to redefine Blackness. Pointing out that poetry is perhaps the best vehicle to initiate this transition of the philosophy from the visual arts to the sphere of the literary, the book follows Dove's reformulation of race as a spatio-temporal domain of existence, and language as lived space. Isolating signifiers to reformulate their associations with sites of historical trauma in the memory, Roy traces how Dove deconstructs history, myth, and music to arrive at a moment that is both post-racial and post-historical.
This book can be useful to students of African American literature at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as to doctoral scholars working on race studies and contemporary African American literature.

Postcolonial Romanticisms: Landscape and the Possibilities of Inheritance describes the production of a new and particular kind of postcolonial text and resituates the notion of literary influence in the context of postcolonial literatures. This book addresses the ways in which Derek Walcott, Garrett Hongo, and Jamaica Kincaid have appropriated aspects of «colonial» culture and how they deploy the tropes of British Romanticism in their own texts. Postcolonial Romanticisms argues that Walcott, Hongo, and Kincaid radically reimagine and rewrite the various traditions that have figured their island landscapes as unhistoricized, unoccupied, and marginal. The landscapes that they write about are necessarily politicized; their own subjectivities are intimately implicated in both the natural beauty as well as the traumatic history of place; they confront and engage to varying degrees the history of their postcolonial geographies, the history of diaspora, of slavery, of the capitalist commodification of the landscape, and the devastating consequences this history has on the individual. These postcolonial writers confront what Derek Walcott calls the «shards of an ancient pastoral», the literal and literary remains of colonial cultural authority that clutter their landscapes.
